In 2002, Abacus Lighting were awarded accreditation as an IS014001 registered company, reflecting its commitment to protecting the environment. The ISO14001 standard specifies requirements for establishing an environmental policy and a management system to minimise the impact the company’s operations has on the environment.

Abacus Lighting installed at Complete Football centre

Abacus Lighting’s commitment to protecting the environment through careful lighting design has helped them secure the contract to supply sports lighting at the Complete Football Centre, Gosforth.

The £3m complex, which opened in October, is set to transform grassroots coaching and is the first of many planned around the UK. Incorporating six five-a-side pitches and a full-size international pitch built to the same dimensions as the new Wembley, it has the flexibility to suit all requirements.

Developed by former NUFC manager Kenny Dalglish and ex-Newcastle and Sunderland player Paul Bracewell, the complex encourages coaching for younger players and small-sided football leagues.

To comply with environmental and planning requirements, Abacus supplied a total of 38 Challenger® 1 floodlights to the main pitch and the five-a-side pitches. Abacus’s Challenger® range of floodlights has been carefully designed to satisfy the requirements of a diverse range of sports lighting applications at every possible level of competition. The Challenger® 1 range of sports lighting offers a specific light control system consisting of a series of complementary measures to effectively control obtrusive light. Precision reflector systems ensure tight beam control, reducing overspill and directing light only where it is needed - on the playing surface!

The floodlighting was mounted onto Abacus’s unique 15m and 8m raising and lowering masts which enable ease of installation and improved health and safety by ensuring that ongoing maintenance can be carried out at ground level.
