Blairgowrie Hydro Plans

CONSTRUCTION of a revolutionary energy project in Blairgowrie’s River Ericht got under way yesterday.

A modern hydro turbine will be used to generate electricity, which will then be sold to the national electricity grid.

The profits are to be invested in related ventures which organisers hope will inject vitality into the local community.

Blairgowrie and Rattray Regeneration Company (BARRC), which is behind the scheme, was awarded funding from the Scottish Government and other grant-giving bodies in July last year.

BARRC director Ross Peters said: “It’s something very positive for the area to look forward to. It will be generating electricity by Christmas.

“With the lease running for 35 years, we’re viewing it as a sustainable, long-term, development.

“People won’t be able to see the turbines because they will be covered but it’s important to stress they won’t damage any of the fish or floral and fauna in the Ericht.

“It’s quite an exciting time for Blairgowrie and Rattray.

“When this is completed the area will be at the forefront of hydro energy development in Scotland.

“There have been a lot of hurdles to negotiate but we’re very pleased that the community will soon be able to see physical progress for the first time.”

Mr Peters said local residents would see representatives from Yorkshire construction firm JN Bentley Ltd in the town.

It is anticipated that the turbine will be installed in a weir close to the former Oakbank grain mill in a few weeks.
